Taking care of the North Korean delegation at the Universiade was a giant task for hosts South Korea, but representatives from both sides said it was a worthwhile effort that improved understanding between the two countries.
Despite skirmishes involving anti-North protesters in the city last week, and a cavalcade of security that escorted the North Korean delegation wherever it went, the people of the two Koreas supported each other wholeheartedly in sports competitions. The presence of the North Korean cheerleading squad added a unique colour to the whole event.
'Daegu is a very conservative city - but having the North Koreans here has been a valuable experience for the people of Korea,' congressman Jung Dong-young told Young Post.
Jung organised a banquet for the North delegation last week, where officials from both countries said the Games had made a positive step towards the 'dream' of re-unification.
The cheerleading squad had the South Korean media captivated wherever they went. Some of the young ladies, supposedly university students, told Young Post it had been a memorable trip.
'We have realised on this visit that we are the same blood and we want Korea to be one nation one day,' said Kim Yeon-jung, 20.
