UTStarcom wins US$80m supply contract
Nasdaq-listed UTStarcom, a major supplier of xiaolingtong equipment in China, has won an US$80 million contract from China Telecom Corp to expand its Internet protocol-based xiaolingtong network in Jiangsu province. The network is a wireless local loop that allows the fixed-line carrier to offer limited mobile services to users at a low cost.
Mobile operator CSL appoints new head
Telstra Corp chief financial officer David Moffat has been named as head of CSL, the second-largest mobile operator in Hong Kong, as part of a management reshuffle of the Australian company's international unit. Mr Moffat, who takes up the position next month, will replace Dick Simpson, who has been named head of Telstra's undersea cable joint venture with PCCW and Reach.
Sina, BBC launch mobile English teaching service
Sina and the BBC have launched an English-teaching short messaging service on the mainland. Since Monday, Sina has offered customers subscriptions to daily mobile messages that contain an English phrase together with the Chinese translation. Sina chief executive Wang Yan said its partnership with the BBC would bring in more services in future.
