People in the television industry have long held the view that Hong Kong plays second fiddle to Singapore in terms of being a media hub. CNBC, Discovery, National Geographic and MTV have all plumped for the Lion City as their production base. With its tax breaks, cheaper overheads and better living standards, who can blame them? But despite all the attractions of the pint-sized city-state, MGM has chosen HK as its regional HQ. MGM is setting up a 24-hour English-language movie channel to be shown via PCCW's broadband TV station NOW. Industry sources say MGM is about to launch a recruitment campaign, with production facilities to be set up in our fair city. Its decision to base itself in Hong Kong is a welcome move, coming as it does when the TV industry seems to be forever cutting back. The venture with PCCW means movie fans need only to turn on their computer to watch MGM's biggest hits.
