It turns out that shoppers from the mainland are not the big spenders we thought they were. According to a CLSA survey, 20 per cent of visitors from across the border spend $6,000 each on one shopping trip, and only 5 per cent said they wanted to buy a property in the city. The perceived notion is that they are buying up all our luxury goods - Chanel watches, Gucci clothes and Louis Vuitton handbags. But apparently, their taste in fine things is not as refined as Hongkongers'. The mad mainland shoppers are not snapping up all the couture collections. Instead, they are heading straight for the fine fashions of Giordano and Bossini, and Chow Sang Sang and Chow Tai Fook for their lovely jewellery.
