Shanghai is considering granting Taiwanese people visas on arrival.

If approved, the relaxation would make life in Shanghai more convenient for the tens of thousands of Taiwanese who, with their families, have flocked to the city for business in recent years. Many manufacturers have moved factories from Taiwan to the city.

About 300,000 Taiwanese live in and around Shanghai.

At present, Taiwanese must apply for entry permits at mainland representative offices in Hong Kong or overseas before they travel to Shanghai.

The city government's spokesman, Jiang Lan, said it was reviewing the proposal but had not decided if or when the relaxation would be implemented.

'The relevant departments [in Shanghai] are actively preparing for the issuance of landing visas to Taiwanese residents,' he said yesterday. They were considering issues such as how much to charge for visas.
