Four people were taken to hospital with breathing problems last night as thousands packed Golden Bauhinia Square to watch the laser and fireworks show.

Police estimated a crowd of about 10,000 people watched the first show at 7.30 pm, and about 8,000 watched the second at 8.30pm. All four who felt unwell were taken to Ruttonjee Hospital where they were treated then discharged. A policewoman who hurt her knee while on crowd control duty was also treated at the hospital.

Some at the show estimated the crowd as much larger, with one security guard claiming there were about 40,000 or 50,000 present.

The nightly laser show resumed last night after repairs to damage caused by last week's typhoon. The public holiday added to the numbers.
