Signalling problems that have delayed the West Rail line are expected to be resolved in about a month, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) chairman said yesterday.

That meant the line should open by the end of the year, the date the company originally agreed to with the government, Michael Tien Puk-sun said.

Mr Tien said the technical difficulty was caused by the high voltage generated by the rail line interfering with the signal system.

The malfunction was related to the hilly terrain of Yuen Long, at the northern end of the line, but it was being repaired.

'We have so far made some good progress,' he said. 'I'm confident we will be able to launch the line by the end of the year.'

Earlier in the summer, the KCRC set a target of October for the opening of the line, about two months ahead of the date it had agreed to with the government.
