SKH Li Ping Secondary School scooped the championship at the Second Build and Shake Inter-school Competition, organised by City University of Hong Kong. Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School, which shared the Best Design Award with TWGHs Kap Yan Directors' College, came a close second, while Assembly of God Morrison Memorial School was third.
The competition, which was held earlier this month, aimed to inspire students' interest in structural engineering and buildings through a model-building exercise.
Equipped with only a wooden board, wood strips, paper, cotton strings and a glue stick, 36 teams from across Hong Kong were asked to build a structure that could withstand a powerful 'earthquake', simulated by a large, shaking table.
The model that survived the highest shaking intensity before collapsing would win.
'Build and shake is a new and interesting idea to many students,' said Professor Sritawat Kitipornchai of CityU's Department of Building and Construction. 'We believe this exciting event will help boost students' interest in learning about science and inspire them to understand more about construction engineering in tertiary education.'
Professor Andrew Leung, the head of the same department, said that he hoped that the competition had encouraged students to think on their feet and to apply their scientific knowledge while having fun.
