Speed-dating - in which strangers have just a few minutes to make an impression - may be all the rage these days, but it may soon become a thing of the past. Supermarket Dating, the phenomena that has begun to take Europe by storm, may knock speed-dating off its pedestal.

It works on the premise that people are single because they work long hours, they get off work, grab food and go home. How sad. In films, people meet in grocery stores all the time ... their eyes meet across the aisle, they grab for the same melon ...

In supermarket dating reality, shopping carts are decorated to identify singles on the prowl, and gimmicks such as champagne and photos are provided. If shoppers spy someone they would like to get to know, they get in contact through customer service.

No one has stepped up to the challenge in Hong Kong, but Pacific Place's Great manager Nick Reitmeier says the high-end food store is planning it. 'We are thinking about it, but we need to figure out how to implement it. If it happens, it will be before Christmas; otherwise, it may have to wait until next year, I'm afraid,' he said.

'It is huge in London, especially at Sainsbury's and Waitrose. Shopping should be fun. There is no reason why not. It is a cool idea and would work really well in Hong Kong, especially with the smaller expat community.'
