Hong Kong people are ready to directly elect their chief executive in 2007.

For five years since the handover, Hong Kong people were not very active in politics.

Then the Hong Kong government performed poorly in its handling of the economic crisis and Sars, it failed to establish effective communication with the people, and tried unsuccessfully to enact an important law that would affect the populace. Now Hong Kong people are making their political views known.

They care about their home city, Hong Kong, and they cherish their freedom.

Arranging for direct election of the next chief executive will require a lot of work, but it should mean a better future for Hong Kong. Making the system more democratic will allow the people to choose a candidate who they believe will help improve the economy and lifestyle of Hong Kong. A democratic vote for the next chief executive will mean there is competition.

Whoever gets elected will try to do their best to improve Hong Kong and endeavour to listen to the voices of the people. If the chief executive does not meet expectations, not only will there be a lot of unsatisfied Hong Kong people, he or she will have little hope of winning the next election.
