Consumer electronics maker Grande Holdings has joined the race for a share in the emerging market for plasma and liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, unveiling a production expansion plan that exceeds China's estimated output for the year.

The company, which also produces conventional cathode ray tube TVs, will expand its annual plasma TV production capacity to about 100,000 units and LCD TVs to about 20,000 units by next year. The plasma TV production plan is ambitious, considering the mainland's total output is projected to reach 80,000 units this year.

About 70 per cent of Grande's output will be exported and the remainder sold in China.

Chairman Christopher Ho Wing-on said there would be a huge demand for the two models. 'We will be marketing hard the plasma and LCD TVs next year ... We aim to become the world's third-largest plasma TV maker.'
