A veteran political activist in Beijing will soon be put on trial for publishing pro-democracy articles on the internet, his family said yesterday. He Depu, 47, is alleged to be a member of the underground Chinese Democratic Party. He has been taking part in democracy movements on the mainland since 1979, according to the Information Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. He was taken from his home in Beijing by police in November, said his wife Jia Jiangyin. She said the authorities did not explain the reason for her husband's arrest. In March, Ms Jia received a notice saying He had been charged for 'subversive actions against the country'. Last month the authorities told the family to hire a lawyer. 'We haven't heard anything from him since the arrest. My husband has never done anyone harm or broken any law. He just posted some articles on the internet calling for liberty and democracy. That is the basic right of every citizen,' said Ms Jia. She said her husband's lawyer was told by the government to start preparing for He's case. The lawyer believed He would appear in court shortly after National Day.
