The Chinese publisher of Senator Hillary Clinton's memoir, Living History, has sent a second letter to publisher Simon & Schuster, but still has not acted on the demand that it recall censored copies of the book.

State-owned Yilin Press said it was continuing its efforts to resolve a conflict that arose after it altered the Chinese-language edition of the book to cut out details critical of the central government and the Communist Party. But the censored book is still on the shelves.

Senator Clinton had said the alterations made to her book were 'amazing and outrageous'.

Simon & Schuster demanded last week that the altered versions of Living History be immediately pulled from shelves and replaced with uncensored versions. The first letter Yilin sent to Simon & Schuster was apologetic in tone, but placed blame in part on the US publisher's failure to promptly send the book to China. Yilin president Zhang Zude said the letter was not a formal apology but an expression of regret.

He would not divulge the contents of the second letter.

Yilin claimed it had made 'technical alterations' to the book which included dropping passages from the book that dealt with Harry Wu Hongda and criticisms of the government. Lawyers for Senator Clinton and Simon & Schuster say they were never notified about the changes.
