Urban renewal officials hope they can prevent old districts turning into slums
The Urban Renewal Authority has announced a pilot scheme to refurbish decrepit buildings.
It hopes the six-month programme will prove an effective way to save old residential areas from turning into urban slums without further straining the authority's resources.
A total of $4 million has been earmarked for the pilot scheme to improve the living conditions in 10 to 15 residential blocks housing about 1,200 families.
The scheme is the authority's first attempt to help home owners maintain their buildings.
The scheme covers buildings that are at least 30 years old and already listed by the Building Department for compulsory maintenance.
