Is Taiwanese girl group S.H.E. just like other girl band along the lines of Canto-pop duo Twins? After listening to their latest album, Super Star, which is their fifth, the answer from me is both yes and no. Like all girl groups, the trio - Hebe, Selina and Ella - have lovely looks and sing mostly pop ballads. However, unlike many Canto-pop idols, it seems that these three are a bit more musical and actually know how to sing. On the album, German musician Jade from Sweetbox and the group's producer, Geo, were invited to write and produce the first single, Super Star, which is a rock number filled with Chinese sounds including an opening played on the ehru and the use of other Chinese instruments. Besides the German guests, top Taiwanese musicians such as Jay Chou and David Tao were also invited to be part of the production. While Chou penned a ballad for the girls, Tao wrote an upbeat R&B number for them. They also covered boy band The Backstreet Boys' How Did I Fall In Love With You and the Bee Gee's I.O.I.O. The record, as a whole, is full of catchy tracks and beautiful melodies. Although the girls' singing is not as impressive as divas like A-mei (Sherry Cheng Huei-mei), is is not bad either. After listening to the music, you can also watch the entertaining 60-minute bonus VCD. It shows the group, formed three years ago and now one of the most popular girl bands in Asia, doing challenges such as rappelling, tightrope walking and being fishermen for a day, and how they make fun of and support each other.
