IN DAYS GONE BY light switches had only one function and didn't look particularly attractive. Today, ordinary switch-plates can be swapped for something more useful, modern and stylish. Australian switch manufacturer Clipsal has taken a leading role in setting this new-look designer trend, creating the ULTI range, which comes in various colours, materials and finishes. The company even offers a 'made-to-order' service for different switch-cover materials, including marble, wood, wallpaper and metal. Programmable and remote-control functions are additional features, which differentiate the new switches from those already on the market.
With more people wanting to create a luxury interior decor using different lighting 'scenes' in their home, dimmers are another desirable feature of the new range. Michael Lam, general manager of Clipsal Asia's ULTI Division (tel: 2487 0261;
www.ulti.biz), reports a growing demand for products with this capability, with the result that all ULTI switches and dimmers can be controlled by one or more wireless remote-control units.
The system is based on radio-transmission technology, enabling users to control various aspects of their environment. Other domestic appliances, such as air-conditioners, coffee machines and music systems, can also be manipulated from a single point.
Switches can be installed in new and existing homes. The wiring configuration is the same as that of conventional light switches, and a 'quick-fit' feature enables the user to replace the existing switches without any re-wiring work. Installation is easy and can be achieved with little more than a screwdriver.
Another leading brand is MK Electric from Britain, which, along with Clipsal, ranks among the most popular with Hong Kong consumers (
www.mkelectric.co.uk). Sleek and stylish switches from MK's Edge and the new Aspect ranges are designed to look special in any environment; the clip-on front plates of the Aspect series neatly conceal the fixing screws to give a flawless appearance. The product is available in seven standard, high-quality finishes: brushed stainless steel, polished chrome, polished brass, champagne, satin chrome, charcoal and white. Most finishes have black or white inserts, as well as a custom-design service for special colours and finishes. At the lower end of the market are switches made by Chinese brands KD and Four Leaf. A browse through the electrical shops along Lockhart Road will give you a good idea of what is available. They range from $40 to $600 each.
Even though changing switches is a fairly simple task, Hong Kong government regulations require that any electrical work - including the installation of electrical switches and dimmers - must be performed by a licensed electrician. A list of such authorised persons is available on the government website at
www.info.gov.hk/bd; or ask the retailer whether installation can be arranged (for an additional charge).
