There are many English expressions based on the word 'lie'. To give the lie to something means to prove that something is not true. Example: Benny Carter certainly gave the lie to the old saying that 'only the good die young'. His recent passing, at the age of 95, robbed jazz of one of the greatest of its elder statesmen. (SCMP, July 27, 2003) When something lies, it does not represent or indicate the truth. 'To misrepresent' is the synonym. Example: Even history will lie by revealing certain facts and hiding others! Remember to join this week's Creative Writing workshop. The topic is 'the biggest lie'. Send it in by post, together with your personal details, such as name, contact number and address.
