Chinadotcom is looking to expand its mobile data applications business beyond Asia, thanks to an alliance with European wireless entertainment provider Jamba! The Nasdaq-listed, Hong Kong-based firm last week said its mobile and portals unit had agreed to form a 50-50 joint venture with German firm Jamba! to extend the market distribution for both partners' products. 'The joint venture with Jamba! is still in its early stages and the financial impact is expected to be minimal in the near term,' said Daniel Widdicombe, chief financial officer at Chinadotcom. 'However, it will enable us to further expand the distribution platform for our wireless products, particularly our in-house developed wireless applications, to Europe and the United States through Jamba!'s distribution network.' Jamba! is also expected to expand into the mobile data services markets in Greater China by using Chinadotcom's presence in Hong Kong, the mainland and Taiwan. Oliver Samwer, chief executive of Jamba!, said the combination of Chinadotcom's mobile application and software development capabilities with the German firm's mobile technology platform should also drive the increase of product offerings from both companies. Jamba! offers wallpaper programs for handsets, single and multiplayer Java-based wireless games, polyphonic ring tones and multimedia messaging services to subscribers in Europe and the US. It also has relationships with key European mobile operators.
