''NO doubt about it, Park'N Shop has thought of everything,'' so says one line in the radio advertisement for the new Garden Road Park'N Shop. Not quite! Although I am very pleased to now have a handy, well stocked and nicely laid out supermarket in Mid-Levels, there has arisen an unfortunate side effect. Living just opposite the petrol station in MacDonnell Road, it has come to my attention that a number of ignorant, annoying and selfish customers, are removing trolleys from the complex that houses the supermarket; despite notices asking them not to do so. The result of which is the cluttering up of pavements in the vicinity.
I am not going to suggest that Park'N Shop is solely to blame for this fatuous activity taking place, but I do however think it could take constructive steps to prevent it.
The shop could at least make sure, that these trolleys do not litter the pavements outside the YWCA and the petrol station; usually overnight.
I would like to suggest that Park'N Shop introduce the coin deposit trolley system, used in most parts of the UK.
With this system you place a GBP1 coin to release and use the trolley, and it is not until you have returned the trolley to a designated spot, that you will be able to recover the GBP1 coin. This will work even better in Hong Kong once we get the $10 coins.
The sooner Park'N Shop takes steps to curb this activity the better. If it leaves it too long, the problem will not just be aesthetic, it will soon become financial; as trolleys go for longer and longer rides.
