A bitter Michael Wong says he was driven to step down by the impact of media and political attacks on his family
Equal Opportunities Commission chairman Michael Wong Kin-chow resigned yesterday, saying he was not willing to endure a destructive media attack and an unsupportive government.
In the wake of a scandal sparked by the sacking of a senior EOC official, the retired Court of Appeal judge said he had been unfairly subject to trial by media and betrayed by the government.
Mr Wong said he felt no remorse but was driven to step down because of the impact the attacks were having on his family.
'Hong Kong is a civilised society run by the rule of law, and no citizen should be tried in public by a media which lacks understanding of the whole affair,' Mr Wong read from a written statement.
'But in the past two weeks, my family and I have had to endure, every day, unfair criticism by the media, and I can hardly withstand such a co-ordinated attack by all the press in Hong Kong single-handedly. Today I deeply feel the destructive power of the media.'
