CUHK was established in 1963, with postgraduate education emphasised from the outset. It established its Graduate School in 1966 and now offers a comprehensive range of research and taught postgraduate degrees up to doctoral level through its seven faculties. Unlike other Hong Kong universities, CUHK's official teaching medium is English and Chinese. By this September, it had 16,624 students, including 7,100 postgraduates - about 40 per cent of the total. The university's largest postgraduate courses are its MBA and teacher-training programmes, with taught master's available in many other continuing and professional areas, such as journalism and social work, and less career-specific subjects including physics, mathematics and cultural studies.
