Working group recommends that more be done to nurture developing industry
What do a dim-witted pig, an eccentric old man dressed in turn-of-the-century clothes, and ancient kung fu warriors have in common?
They are all signs of the burgeoning digital entertainment sector in Hong Kong - an industry that needs more investment in infrastructure, education, research, development and marketing, according to a report released yesterday by a government working group.
Hong Kong has at least 350 digital entertainment companies, up from fewer than 100 five years ago, the report said. The working group was set up in March last year to examine various measures to help develop the industry in Hong Kong.
The government has been trying to turn Hong Kong into a centre for high value-added services to help the city compete on a global level.
The report cited several success stories from Hong Kong's digital entertainment sector, including the animated movie My Life as McDull, featuring a slow-witted pig and his impoverished single mother.
The online role-playing game Oriental Heroes, by Gu Long Online, is another locally produced hit. The game is based on a Chinese epic tale in which players take on the role of mythical warriors.
