The long-awaited Cartier Tradition exhibition drew a gathering of serious jewellery collectors, including several socialites who aren't afraid to spend. Guest of honour was actress Cherie Chung, who was escorted to the event by Cartier Tradition director Bernhard Berger, who flew in from Geneva for the show. Looking dazzling in pearls was former chief secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang, who didn't bat an eye at the display's 52-carat emerald pendant necklace - perhaps not a sensible purchase? Only the hardcore socialites could handle such jewels in their high, glass cases. Among them were former Miss Hong Kong, May Woo, Perveen Crawford, charity queen Alice Chiu and Shirley Li. Unfortunately, not one of these fine ladies stepped up to drop a cool $93.6 million on the emeralds. Was it the condition of the jewels, or just the condition of the economy that kept these ladies of luxury from buying?
