Pat McGrath

Carmen Li

Who? Internationally renowned make-up artist Pat McGrath, the woman behind the vibrantly-painted Kabuki faces at Dior's fashion extravaganzas and the smouldering, femme fatale complexions at Gucci, is known for her original take on lip colours and eye-shadows. A favourite among the likes of John Galliano, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana as well as Giorgio Armani, McGrath is one of the world's most sought after talents and is a regular player backstage of all major shows. As Dominco Dolce once testified, 'Pat started a new age of make-up... She is not a make-up artist, she's an artist.'

How did it happen? English-born, a young McGrath taught herself the tricks of the trade by raiding her mother's beauty cupboard and experiment with eye-shadows and lipsticks. After graduating from art school in Northhampton, McGrath worked as a secretary in the civil service. She met Kim Bown, stylist for i-D during the early 90s and began collaborating on projects at i-D and later Italian Vogue. In 1999, she was hired by Giorgio Armani to create his cosmetic range.

What is her aesthetic like? The word versatility best sums up McGrath's aesthetic. She has a reputation for creating original looks to compliment runway collections, with designs swaying from outrageously painted faces of cobalt blue, neon fuschia and glittered lips at Dior to light, sheer finishes in neutral washes at Armani.

What does the artist have to say? 'Every designer takes you on a different journey. It's great when they let you into their fantasy.'

Where are her products available? The artist has yet to debut her personal cosmetic range but the Giorgio Armani line she helped create is available at the Armani store in Chater House, Central, and Seibu, Pacific Place, Admiralty.
