Tourists from the mainland are planning to spend more money in Hong Kong, according to a new survey on the spending habits of the city's largest tourist market.

The study also found that more than 30 per cent of residents in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen plan to visit Hong Kong in the next two years.

On average, they will stay for four days and spend $8,700. Ten per cent of respondents said they were prepared to spend more than $18,000.

Ocean Park is the top destination for tourists from across the border, who also plan to buy diamonds, jewellery and electronic goods and to eat seafood, according to the report from market research firm Synovate.

The survey also dispelled earlier fears about negative reactions from Hong Kong residents to the influx of visitors.
