ELCOTEQ

The mobile phone manufacturer has named its Hong Kong-based Asia-Pacific president, Jouni Hartikainen,  as chief executive and executive vice-president.

Mr Hartikainen, 42,  is due to take over the helm of the Finnish contract manufacturer next May, when president and chief executive Lasse Kurkilahti  leaves to take up the position of president and chief executive of the Finnish chemicals group Kemira.

Mr Hartikainen has been with Elcoteq since 2000, when he joined to head global sales and customer service.

He was made head of its communications network equipment business in 2001 and head of Asian operations last year.

He previously worked at Tecnomen Oy,  a network equipment manufacturer in Finland. He has also worked in Canada and Malaysia.

Elcoteq also appointed Jukka Jaamaa to the new position of executive vice-president. Mr Jaamaa, who is based in Germany, is currently president, communications network equipment /industrial electronics, Europe.

Mr Jaamaa previously  worked as senior vice-president, industrial electronics, after joining in 1998 as group vice-president, Central and Western Europe.

He previously worked at Perlos Oyj, a Finnish manufacturer of electronics components.

INMARSAT

The satellite company has named Ken Cheong (below) as business development manager for the Asia-Pacific region. Mr Cheong has been with Inmarsat for 15 years and will work with the company's regional director, Frankie Neo, who is based in Singapore.

Dan Hodges has been given the title of partner champion  and will work with SingTel, KDDI and MCN (China).

Mr Hodges, 32, has been with Inmarsat for two years and has lived in Hong Kong for the past three years.

He was business development manager, Asia-Pacific, for the telecommunications company GN Comtext from 2000, and sales and marketing manager (Europe, Middle East and Africa) for British digital data provider ChartCo  in 1999 and 2000.

Before ChartCo he worked for Kelvin Hughes, specialising in integrated navigation systems.

Mr Hodges has a BSc in oceanography from Southampton University.

ZI CORP

Michael Donnell  has been promoted to president and chief executive of the software firm, replacing company founder and chief executive of 10 years Michael Lobsinger.

Mr Lobsinger will stay on as chairman of the board of directors.

Mr Donnell, 44, joined Zi in July as president and chief operating officer after three years as a consultant in the wireless industry.  Before that, he was chief executive of Cellular One in San Francisco, which later merged with AT&T, and  spent 15 years with PageNet.

He has a BA in marketing from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Mr Lobsinger has been chairman of Zi  since 1993, when he bought a controlling share in the company.

Before taking control of Zi, he ran a real-estate firm in Canada.

He has degrees in history and political science from the University of Saskatchewan.

COREL

Venture capitalist Amish Mehta  (left) has taken the helm as new interim chief executive at the troubled Canadian software firm.

Former president and chief executive Derek Burney (right)  will replace departing chairman James Baillie.

Mr Mehta, a principal at San Francisco-based Vector Capital, was responsible for Vector's acquisition of Corel in August. He will be chief executive until the company can find someone to take on the job.

Before joining Vector, he was chief executive of CommercialWare, a provider of retail software. He has an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Mr Burney, previously Corel's chief technology officer, joined the company from the software firm IMSI, where he served as vice-president and regional manager. He has a BSc in computer science from Carleton University, Ottawa.

AMD The chip manufacturer has appointed Chinese academic Professor Guangnan Ni to its global consumer advisory board.

Professor Ni is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a professor at the Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The advisory board is made up of 13 consumer and small business experts, academics, journalists and technology futurists, appointed to identify and resolve challenges facing home and small-business technology worldwide.

Professor Ni was chief technical officer at computer giant Legend from 1984 to 1995.

He was elected to the National People's Congress in 1993, and was one of the first academics to join the Chinese Academy of Engineering, in 1994. He joined the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in 1998.

He has been president of the Chinese Information Processing Society since  last year.

CODEBANK

The internet technology holding firm has appointed Anthony Kwok Ching  as chairman and chief executive. He will replace Deng Yi, who resigned as chairman and chief executive last month. Mr Deng will remain on the board of directors.

Codebank has been undergoing restructuring since its shares were suspended last year, pending completion of an investigation into the troubled company's finances.

ACER

Rudi Schmidleithner has been named president of the Taiwanese computer giant's Pan American operations

Mr Schmidleithner,  who will head business for Acer America and Acer Latin America, was previously the business unit manager for Acer notebook products in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

He takes over from Patrick Lin, who will take a senior management position with the Acer IT products business group, working under the company headquarters.
