THE Shangri-La Hotel group is planning to build a five-star hotel in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. Sources said that Shangri-La would invest US$50 million in the hotel. There were no representatives from Shangri-La Asia or Kerry Trading available for comment. Both these companies belong to Malaysian tycoon, Robert Kuok. Sources also said that the hotel project was awaiting the approval of the Beijing authorities. Hotel projects in China come under close scrutiny from the government. Another source suggested that China Everbright was involved in the project. But a spokeswoman from company said it was not involved. Sources said that Shangri-La was looking at Eastern Square, a site east of city centre.
