Housing authority agrees on flat allocations
The Housing Department proposal on allocating cheaper public flats to welfare recipients was endorsed by a Housing Authority committee yesterday. The rent review committee also backed another proposal, which, if implemented, would mean all new tenants would be given smaller units than they received now. The public will be consulted on whether they agree with the government proposals early next year.
Nigerian woman wins appeal over taxi punch-up
A magistrate was wrong to find a Nigerian woman, who engaged in fisticuffs with a taxi driver, was an aggressor and not a person striking back in self-defence, a Court of First Instance judge ruled. Felicia Onwugbonu, 38, was convicted and fined $750 over the fracas with a taxi driver at Tin Kau on October 20 last year. But Madame Justice Clare-Marie Beeson ruled the original judgment had erred in turning Onwugbonu from a legitimate 'self-defender' into a 'wanton fighter in a public place'.
Swoop on 91 illegals
Ninety-one mainlanders were arrested for illegally working in three wholesale markets in Cheung Sha Wan. The 85 men and six women were arrested when police raided the markets at 4am.
