Legco sars motion urges scheme to protect medics
Legco last night passed a motion urging the government to set up a scheme to ensure medical staff can get insurance cover for Sars. Lawmakers also asked the government to review the system as insurance companies were unwilling to cover the risk of Sars. From January 1, workers in hospitals, private clinics and health-care facilities might not be covered if they contract Sars at work.
Security tight for Israeli president's 3-day visit
Israeli President Moshe Katsav will be under tight security when he visits Hong Kong on Sunday, Police Commissioner Dick Lee Ming-kwai said. He said police were conducting a risk assessment on the three-day visit. Mr Katsav will be the second Israeli president to visit Hong Kong since 1999. He will meet Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa, visit Kwai Chung container terminal and the Cyberport before leaving on Tuesday for Beijing to meet President Hu Jintao.
Lawmakers demand relief from taxation burden
Lawmakers passed a motion calling on the government to introduce measures to relieve the hardship faced by the middle class who have suffered from inadequate policies over the past six years. Progressive Alliance lawmaker David Chu Yu-lin put forward the motion. Supporters urged the government to relieve the tax burden on the middle class.
