I refer to the letter headlined 'Hong Kong's selfless leader' (December 9).
All Hongkongers would agree that Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa is a good person. He is selfless and has devoted himself to the good of Hong Kong. However it is misleading to say that these attributes make him suitable to be the leader of the government.
Being a kind person is not the main requirement. The most important points of leadership are making decisions and co-ordinating subordinates' work. Mr Tung has failed in both. All of us remember his '85,000 policy' in housing. Also disappointing is his education policy. Not long ago, he said education requires an investment which should not be cut. Then his officials declared there would be a sharp cut in university funding.
Sometimes the response is so slow that the public gets lost as to the purpose of a policy. A good leader must be responsive enough to ease public worries. Who would say that the government is responsive?
Mr Tung has not made a constructive proposal, so why employ him as our leader? Hong Kong's recovering economy is mainly due to help from the mainland.
We are not looking for a perfect leader, but he must not ruin Hong Kong. Mr Tung is suitable to be our father but not our leader.
