Time for consensus

There are so many quotable quotes in Premier Wen Jiabao's speeches during his visit to the US. Our democratic politicians would do well to pay special attention to two.

In a speech to overseas Chinese, he said: 'Like all of you, I want to build a strong, modern and democratic China.' In a dinner speech, hosted by nine leading US-China friendship and business groups, Premier Wen said: 'President Thomas Jefferson once said, 'I like the dreams of the future better than the history of the past'.'

It is time anti-China democratic politicians changed their stance and supported Mr Wen's effort to build a democratic China. Hong Kong will have no chance to evolve a democratic political system if democratic politicians are anti-China.

And 'China advisers' need to change their stance of viewing everybody who supports democracy as anti-China. When our democratic politicians and these China advisers can discard their past baggage of animosity towards one another, and start talking and working together, it will not be difficult to come to a consensus regarding the reform of our political system.
