The Meaning Of Everything
by Simon Winchester
Oxford University Press $170
Communication bedevils us: the speed and ease of the internet; the constant stream of television and radio; the forests of paper printed, perused and pulped ...
Much of this communication is done in English. But the more widely English is used, the more it confuses. Two people conversing in English will not necessarily understand each other.
To pin down English, and to precisely define its words and their meanings, the Philological Society decided in 1857 to commission a dictionary that would give the meaning of everything: every possible word, with its date of birth and biography of use.
