Hole in the hill

Hole in the hill

Aberdeen locals refer to this fishball noodle shop as the 'hole in the hill', but to everyone else, especially foodies in the know, Tse Kee Fishball Noodles Restaurant is a Southside institution credited with having the best-tasting fishball noodles in Hong Kong for 50 years. Time stands still when you enter the tiny shop, with its dim yellow lights and old-fashioned tiled walls with posters of Cantonese opera stars. Tse Kee is known for traditional favourites such as fishballs with rice noodles, fried fish rolls and fried fish skin. Everything is made fresh each day with fish bought early in the morning from the market at the Aberdeen typhoon shelter. According to Aberdeen residents, Tse Kee got it's nickname 'hole in the hill' because when the business started 50 years ago it was a street stall tucked in a cavernous part of a hill. In the 70's Tse Kee moved into a commercial building on Old Main Street, Aberdeen, but the name was so endearing that it stuck. Calling the shots now is Tse's daughter, whom every addresses as 'big sister'.

Tse Kee Fishball Noodles Restaurant, 80 Old Main Street, Aberdeen, tel: 2552 3809. Opening hours: 10am-6pm.
