The newly elected president of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants would like to see China make it easier for local accountants to work on the mainland.
Roger Best said he was disappointed the closer economic partnership arrangement (Cepa) offered little to help accountants work in China.
Under the Cepa agreement, the Securities and Futures Commission and China Securities Regulatory Commission made it easier for mainland and Hong Kong brokers to work in each others' markets. However, no such provision was made for accountants.
Mr Best said he would work with the government and mainland accountancy bodies on the issue.
'I am disappointed the first round of Cepa contains little to help accountants work in China. Let's put our hope in the next round,' Mr Best said.
However, a government source told the South China Morning Post that some Hong Kong accountants had expressed fears over increased competition.
The source said this made it difficult for accountants to reach consensus on a mutual recognition agreement.
