Reflecting on the state of the national football team, one avid fan had this to say: 'They've only brought us tears of pain, not joy.'
For the second Southeast Asia Games in succession, Singapore went home before the opening ceremony, bringing further disappointment to the Young Lions' supporters. 'Goal 2010 ... They should just add another zero to that,' the fan added.
Goal 2010 is the official target to send Singapore to the World Cup, while the mid-term target is to win next year's Tiger Cup - but both look quite unattainable, even to the casual observer.
Like many other Asians, Singaporeans love football. Most taxi drivers can detail the latest developments in the English Premier League and everybody has an opinion about the transfer of David Beckham from Manchester United to Real Madrid and how well he is settling in.
But when it comes to Singaporean football and the S-League, Singapore's professional league, it is another story. Last season, attendance at S-League matches averaged a paltry 2,000.
Few Singaporeans support a specific team within the league, and a raging debate has started on whether the country should do away with the S-League altogether.
