Six computers fulfil six dreams

Andy Chen

Ho Chi-kit, a web designer who suffers spinal muscular atrophy, had been dreaming of the perfect present - a more powerful computer to improve his work and reduce the time he spends waiting for computer programs to run.

Thanks to Operation Santa Claus that dream has come true and the 24-year-old, a member of Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (FSMA), will receive a notebook computer this Christmas.

'I will use the computer to help update the FSMA homepage and I will take some freelance jobs from outside,' he said.

'It will enable me to do things I couldn't do before. I am very happy and I didn't expect to have the computer in such a short period of time. I would like to thank the person who donated the computer to me.'

That kind-hearted man is Eric Cheng, who donated six computers to people with spinal muscular atrophy.

Mr Cheng was the convener of 'Hong Kong Computer Festival 2003'. One day, he received a phone call from Superintendent Peter Hunt, the district commander of Shamshuipo.

'He knew that I organised the computer festival and asked if I could help. So, I donated six notebook computers,' he said.

Mr Cheng was particularly happy that he could help children with the condition and said he would like to visit them before Christmas.

'I was hoping to see the children but was told they were too sick to leave the hospital. If the children aren't too sick, I would like to visit them,' he said.
