Popular South African jockey Weichong Marwing terminated his Hong Kong season with a winner for the old firm at Sha Tin yesterday, then pledged: 'I'll be back.' 'I'll miss the fans here but I have to have my priorities straight,' Marwing said after winning on the Ivan Allan-trained Fantastic Star. 'I'm sure I'll be back to ride here again and I hope soon. Hong Kong has been a place with some very special memories for me - like winning the Derby and the international race on Olympic Express, winning on horses like Fairy King Prawn, Jeune King Prawn and Self Flit. 'These are some of my favourite horses. Really, every winner is special in its own way.' The pressures of personal issues, which have built on Marwing during recent weeks and caused him to stand down at times from rides, led to him taking a week off early this month and returning to South Africa. Unsuccessful in resolving his problems, Marwing realised that a more serious break was necessary and he requested a release from his Club jockey contract - that request was officially granted by the Jockey Club on Friday. Marwing said he would leave today for South Africa and plans to take a break from race riding altogether once he gets home. 'I've no plans to ride for a while when I get back. I'll have a real break, get things sorted out and I probably won't get on a horse again until February,' he said. To combine with Allan and Fantastic Star was a fitting farewell, as the pair have been such a successful combination in the past 21/2 years, with their wins including a Hong Kong Derby, Hong Kong Mile, Hong Kong Classic Mile, Champions Mile, Chairman's Sprint Prize and two National Day Cups amongst a string of lesser events. 'Ivan has been so staunch. He has stuck by me and supported me. He's been a very generous friend,' Marwing said. 'So it's nice to finish today with one for Ivan and especially after the horse was a bit unlucky last time, losing on protest like that. 'He was probably a bit awkward around Happy Valley at this stage, being a big strider and still learning, but he was much happier today at Sha Tin. He might not always be like that around the Valley. He may grow to handle it but while he's still a big baby Sha Tin suits him better.'
