Competition in Hong Kong's small online auction market is going to intensify after United States giant eBay announced on Monday the official launch of its localised platform.

The Chinese-language only portal of eBay - www.ebay.com.hk - displays items for sale in Hong Kong. Vendors can list and sell for free.

'In Hong Kong, we already have a huge export market and we are now focusing on building the domestic market,' said Frederic de Bure, the managing director of eBay Hong Kong and Singapore.

The site was launched at the request of the local auction community, Mr de Bure said.

'We just want to offer the basic functionalities of buying and selling. It just goes back to the root of eBay as it started in the US. If we provide the best trading platform to our users, we will become the premier marketplace in Hong Kong,' he said.
