Am I alone in being troubled when Rupert Chan talks about 'other people's language' ('Mind your language', December 19)?

Is Mr Chan suggesting that a language belongs only to a certain group, for example, that Cantonese belongs only to the Chinese and English only to the British?

If so, he seems to contradict himself by giving insights into the English language as a non-native speaker. Otherwise he must accept the insights that non-native speakers of Cantonese have into that language.

To speak of any language as belonging to one group of people is not only illogical but quite ethnocentric.

Raise taxes

I agree with the suggestion that the government increase the salaries tax rate and profits tax for companies with annual profits of more than $10 million as a way to reduce the budget deficit.

This kind of company should be subject to a higher tax rate and be responsible for helping to finance the government's expenditure.

The government has to find many ways to revitalise the Hong Kong economy and reduce the deficit as soon as possible. I think the Democratic Party has made a good suggestion because there are a lot of companies which earn annual profits of more than $10 million.
