Chan Chun-pan
Final-year accounting student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and winner of a Goldman Sachs 2003 Global Leader award for outstanding students.
'I would like to pursue a career as an auditor as I believe this is a very meaningful profession. Three years after graduation, I expect to have my qualification as a certified public accountant and within 15 years would like to be an audit partner. I worked last summer for Ernst & Young and will probably take up a position there, starting in September. I felt honoured to win the Goldman Sachs award. It gave me an insight that anything is possible, as long as we take the first step, and was recognition that what I have done in the past was correct and meaningful. It also gave me courage to persist in future career advancement.
'I believe a good leader has many different roles: to be a communicator, a listener, an observer, an activator, a monitor and a team player. My role models are my parents - my father, who is a good businessman and skilled at managing employees, and my mother, who has taught me a lot about compassion.
'This year I plan to enjoy my last semester at university and continue my studies with the aim of receiving first-class honours. I aim to be more active in charity work with Oxfam and sponsor a second child through World Vision.
'I attribute my success so far to my college, La Salle College, which is a good place for nurturing leaders, and HKUST, a world-class university which gives students many chances to take part in competitions and internships, fostering personal development. My wish for 2004 is to see Hong Kong flourish.'
