Nepali dancers from Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo) perform at last weekend's Friends Unlimited Carnival outside the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. The third annual event organised by the ethnic rights group Unison featured teachers, students and their friends from a range of cultures to promote 'racial equality and harmony'.

Stalls and performances, including a fashion show, hip-hop dancing, a taekwondo display, multi-ethnic dances, singing and drama, were united under this year's theme 'We see, we hear, we care'. Unison director Fermi Wong welcomed participants and the public with an opening speech that called for people to be sensitive to 'the inner struggling and voices of our ethnic minority friends'.

'Most of the ethnic minorities consider Hong Kong as their home. They aspire to blend well with others in society, to be part of the community and to contribute,' she said. 'What they are in need of are equal opportunities.' Ms Wong said Hong Kong should protect its pluralistic and multi-racial character while striving for a society that was 'just, equal, benevolent and civilised'.
