Customs inspectors found 6.5kg of cannabis resin hidden inside 41 packs of instant noodles in the bag of a Nepalese traveller at Chek Lap Kok airport yesterday.

The man, 23, was apprehended at 12.30am when customs officers noticed him acting suspiciously after collecting a nylon bag in the baggage reclaim area. He had arrived from Kathmandu.

Inside the nylon bag were two plastic bags containing 41 packs of instant noodles, a paper box and his clothes, according to Daniel Cheung Chi-kwong, head of customs' Drug Investigation Division.

The contraband was discovered when officers opened the packs of noodles. Their suspicions had been aroused by the fact that they appeared bulkier than normal, Mr Cheung said.

Customs seized 5.5kg of cannabis resin from inside the packs and a further 1kg under food in the paper box.

'Each pack of instant noodles was properly sealed. Inside, cannabis was wrapped in cling film and carbon paper. We believe the wrapping was a bid to disguise the haul,' Mr Cheung said.
