The controversial Church of Zion is to place advertisements in two newspapers today to hit back at recent media reports which branded it a cult.

The sect advises followers to drink hydrogen peroxide every day in order to cure a host of diseases.

The group resurfaced in Yuen Long and Tin Shui Wai recently, issuing invitations to secondary school students to participate in its activities.

Mainstream churches will hold a news conference today, hoping to help people distinguish between orthodox religious groups and cults.

The Church of Zion was active in 1996, but has kept a low profile since then amid a welter of criticism. Mainstream Christian churches have condemned it as a cult and its leader, Leung Yat-wah, as a teacher of false doctrines.

During a two-hour service with 2,000 followers at the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kowloon Bay yesterday, Mr Leung spent more than an hour defending the group. He said the media did not report the truth, but rather wrote only for the sake of sensationalism and high circulation.
