The opinions of mainland drafter of the Basic Law Xiao Weiyun (''Universal suffrage in 2007 flouts Basic Law,'' January 17) are an excellent example of the cynical approach of those who oppose the implementation of democracy in any part of Chinese territory. First they make wicked interpretations of the law, then they try to blame the economy for public discontent. What Mr Xiao does not want to see is that the Hong Kong economy is in much better shape than the political system, which needs improvement. And he seems not to understand that the transfer of sovereignty did give power to the Hong Kong people but more power to a few persons who are well connected in Beijing. As publisher Jimmy Lai said, the handover replaced colonialism with feudalism. It is sad that an 80-year-old gentleman has not yet understood that Hong Kong people are not so easily deceived.
