Freelance rider Howard Cheng Yue-tin has been slapped with a nine-day ban for his riding of My Fortune at Sha Tin last Sunday. Cheng was suspended until February 29, after stewards found him guilty of failing to 'take all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure My Fortune was given a full opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible placing'. The penalty will start following the meeting at Sha Tin on Saturday. Cheng has a right of appeal. The Derek Cruz-trained My Fortune began tardily then drifted a number of lengths astern of the second-last runner before passing three horses in the final 200 metres to finish 11th, 10 lengths from winner Country Music. Chief stipendiary steward Jamie Stier last night issued a report saying Cheng failed to take sufficient measures to improve his position between the 900m and the 400m and then failed to ride My Fortune with sufficient vigour. No action was taken against Cruz but he was told his evidence in the inquiry had been recorded.
