From the Lord of the Dance, to Cepa, to A Space Odyssey, the themes of last night's Lunar New Year fireworks show had something for everyone.
Despite the cold weather and drizzle, more than 275,000 spectators gathered on both sides of Victoria Harbour to watch the $2 million, 23-minute display.
Spectator Mr Chan, who stood near the Tsim Sha Tsui clock tower with his daughter, said he had only watched the show on television in previous years. 'I came here this year because I want my four-year-old daughter to watch the fireworks in person. It's cold and it's raining but it's worth it,' he said.
The show lit up the sky at 8pm, with music from Lord of the Dance accompanying the first booming pyrotechnics. The fireworks were blasted from three barges moored in the harbour.
A display featuring '3D space rings' and silver glittering stars drew gasps from the crowd. Pyro Magic Productions, which designed the show, said it represented China's space programme entering a new era with astronaut Yang Liwei's circling of the Earth last year.
That display was followed by a segment portraying the dream of Chinese astronauts landing on Mars. Its water-level bursts of light symbolised Martians popping out from the ground to welcome the space craft.
