Barenaked Ladies
Everything to Everyone
(Reprise)
In American Psycho, Patrick Bateman describes his love for Huey Lewis and The News. 'I think their undisputed masterpiece is Hip To Be Square. A song so catchy most people probably don't listen to the lyrics, but they should. Because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself,' he says, before using an axe to kill a fellow broker.
Bateman stood for everything that was bland, conformist and square - and apart from his tendencies towards serial murders, there's little separating him from that uber man-woman, Ross from Friends. And chances are he would have been a fan of this lot.
Softer than a cardigan made from cotton wool, Barenaked Ladies are five talented Canadians who made it big in the US. Unfortunately for them, the rest of the world hasn't really cottoned on. Toothless to the point of irritation, this is geek rock without the irony.
