A GROUP of judges and legal officers from Shenzhen turned down a chance to discuss human rights in China with Amnesty International in London, cancelling a lunch meeting at the last moment.
The seven judges and officials from the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court are on a week-long tour of Britain to gain an understanding of the British legal system.
But on Tuesday they pulled out of a lunch meeting with the Amnesty International Secretariat to be hosted by Derek Evans, head of the organisation's Asia and Pacific Region.
An Amnesty spokesman said it appeared the judges had not understood the organisation's role in helping prisoners of conscience - and when they realised they said they had no authority to go ahead.
The judges arrived in Britain on Monday and agreed to meet Amnesty officials after an approach by the organisation.
