Do You Know

It must be a total drag living in the considerable shadow of reigning pop princess Beyonce Knowles. And it's got to hurt like a roundhouse kick to the side of the head when Kelly Rowland can still ride off with a No 1 hit with Nelly.

And it must be so annoying to still be referred to as the 'third singer' or 'back-up dancer' of Destiny's Child when you've got your second solo album on the shelves.

Sadly for Michelle Williams, although she's real pretty and can sing a hot ditty or two, few will take notice because of her other career. Just like her 2002 debut, From My Heart To Yours,Williams has clearly created her own take on the contemporary gospel-R&B sound.

She even won a Mobo (Music of Black Origin) award in the best gospel act category for that effort. But, still, how many Destiny's Child fans know that? In fact, who can even recall a song from that album?

The point is, Williams is yet to make a mark on the charts the way her two best friends have, and this latest release is unlikely to change matters.

Do You Know is a good showcase for Williams' sweet, slightly husky voice. It opens very promisingly with an upbeat take on Latin-funk, Purpose In Your Storm.

Later, things take a turn for soulful here and the groovy there, with bits of jazz, slow beats, heart-felt wails and bap-bap-baps thrown into the heavily produced mix.

Overall, there are 14 cuts of agreeable material, but nothing as sexy or as dirty as that which Beyonce has trademarked, or as ridiculously catchy and poppy as what Kelly has become. We, like Williams, are still waiting for that sock-it-to-ya hit.
