The comma is a very common punctuation that experienced writers use almost by instinct.
Commas provide breathing space in a sentence, giving it rhythm and musicality. When you are starting out as a writer, it is safer to follow the rules for using commas.
1. To separate items in a list.
We use a comma to separate items in a list and stop them from getting jumbled. We usually separate all the items except for the last two, which instead are linked by 'and' :
Example: We bought sweets, chocolate, Coke and apples.
A good way of remembering this rule is that each comma can be replaced by the word 'and' if you wished.
The example would then become: We bought sweets and chocolate and Coke and apples.
